The Silkroaders now are the Weis family who has vast indivual experience with silkroad trips and wants to share their enthusiasm about the region with others. The "First Way" is to take unlimited time, limited money and head off to do it. The "Second Way" is to take limited time, unlimited money and book onto a tour group who takes care of everything. The "Third Way", finally, is traveling that is emcumbered by limited time and a desire to meet some of the day to day challenges of "First Way" traveling. The cost falls somewhere between the other "Ways" and given your limited time on the road seeks to minimize the negative impact on your mind and body. Don't be misled into thinking "First Way" travel is the most difficult - it is really a snap if you can ignore a few inconviences. The most difficult travel is the "Third Way" - you setup a plan and attempt to fully execute it against a strict timetable. This form of travel consists of making arrangements, as much as possible, to secure transportation (air, rail, bus) and decent hotels for an itinerary that you work out before you leave home. No one meets you at the airport, carries your bags, helps you find the bus station, takes you to restaurants or fends off the touts. That is all your responsibility and is part of traveling that is a challenge and "fun". Last, but not least: the Third Way costs a fraction of what the tour groups you will encounter are paying, though you will stay at the same hotels, ride the same transport and have much more time and ability to absorb what you are experiencing. Make the "Third Way" your preferred choice of traveling, too.
